After the Second World War, many people asked themselves: How can we prevent individuals from losing their rights? They wrote down rules – as protection for each and every one of us. So that no one is marginalised or dehumanised and we can live together successfully. These rules became our Grundrechte – that was in 1949, 76 years ago. Since then, the Basic Law has been the foundation of our coexistence - our common set of rules. It speaks of freedom, equality and – again and again – dignity.
“Human dignity is inviolable.”
This is how Article 1 of the Grundgetz begins. But what does that actually mean? Do you use the word dignity for yourself? For others? How can equality come about? And what does freedom really mean? In the exhibition, 19 artists show their view of the Grundrechte – their ideas, their questions, their pictures. We look at the artworks together and start talking, asking questions – without any fear of saying the wrong thing. Because there is no right or wrong in art.
In the workshop, we discover the works of art together and ask: What do they have to do with us? It's about the I, the You – and the We: What is important to you? What is important to me? How do we come together? How do we ensure that you and I have the same rights? That things are fair? But also: What is important to us? How do we want to live together? And what can a future look like in which everyone feels comfortable?
Before the visit, you will receive preparatory materials to familiarise you with the Grundrechte.
